The Story of the MAWP QUILT
At the April 2002 meeting of MAWP, President Mylan Masson stated that she would like someone to make a quilt for the MAWP. Mylan did not have a specific idea for the quilt, but knew that it would be neat to have one. My name is Nancy Dosdall, and I was sitting next to Michelle Schenach from Goodhue County. Michelle and I starting talking about the quilt and how it should be designed. Michelle stated that she would contact each sheriffs department in the state for a shoulder patch. After the meeting, we approached Mylan and told her of our ideas. Mylan told us to go with it. When I returned to Benson, I spoke to Carolyn Fleider, owner of Lady Slipper Quilt Shop in Benson. I told her of the idea, but that I did not have the design ready to go at this time. After we talked about the idea for awhile, it was decided to do the State of Minnesota with each of the counties being the colors of the officers uniforms. Carolyn picked out the colors and had a stack of 45 different fabrics for me to use; blue for the city officers, brown for county officers, green for conservation officers and maroon for state patrol officers. Marge Freidlein, a retired Swift County Dispatcher, assisted me with drawing the map of Minnesota. We used an opaque projector at the Benson High School and drew the counties onto newspaper stock. I then got to work. I traced each county onto freezer paper, ironed the freezer paper onto the material for that county and cut each county out with a seam line around each piece. I started sewing the pieces together at the southeast part of the state and progressed from there. Once the state was together, Carolyn and I decided that gold would be the best for the border since most of the patches had either gold or yellow. Carolyn had a piece of black with stars in it that was used for the next border, for our badges. The basketweave material for the outside border was used for our equipment belts. Michelle sent me the patches as she collected them. At this time, April 2005, we have all county patches. Once the quilt top was completed, I machine quilted around each county. When the quilting was complete, I sewed each shoulder patch onto the border. I met with Mylan twice in St. Cloud and once at my residence to show her the progress on the quilt. I started the quilt in May and was finished in time for the quilt to be entered in the Minnesota State Fair for 2002. Though we didn't win at the fair, our quilt was admired far and wide. ~Nancy Dosdall, Benson Police Department |
